Teeth whitening at home: using a dentist-prescribed kit
Originally published
Whitening at home can be part of professional dental treatment. A dentist-prescribed kit comes with an assessment, trays and instructions suited to the product and your teeth. That is different from trying household mixtures or buying an unfamiliar gel online.
A lighter shade is a choice, not a requirement for a healthy smile. Natural tooth colour varies, and no home method can promise the same result for everyone or permanent whiteness after one course.
Start with an assessment
The dentist checks your teeth and gums and asks about previous dental treatment. Decay, gum disease or a painful tooth may need attention first. Existing crowns, veneers and fillings will not lighten like natural teeth, which can affect the colour match.
Surface stains and tartar may need professional cleaning, but cleaning does not bleach the underlying tooth. The colour comes partly from enamel and dentine, not from the shade of your bones. You can have healthy, well-cleaned teeth that are naturally less white.

Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and clean between your teeth each day. Smoking affects oral health as well as staining. Avoid trying to scrub away your natural shade or treating strong acids and abrasive mixtures as harmless alternatives to a dental product.
Using custom whitening trays
The team checks the fit of your trays and shows you how much gel to apply. Follow those instructions: filling a tray to the brim is not more effective and may expose the gums to excess gel. Do not use petroleum jelly as a substitute for correct fitting and application unless your dentist specifically instructs you to.
Wearing time depends on the gel and treatment plan. Some products are prescribed for daytime use, others overnight. A universal five-hour maximum is not appropriate for every kit. Do not change the schedule or concentration yourself.

Remove trays for eating and drinking as instructed. Clean and store them according to the directions, avoiding hot water that could distort them. Keep the gel safely away from children and follow its storage instructions.
The course may take several weeks, with reviews to assess progress. There is no guaranteed two-shade change or fixed seven-to-twenty-one-day result for every person.
Sensitivity and aftercare
Some people develop tooth sensitivity or gum irritation. Contact the team if this is troublesome or persistent; they may need to adjust or pause treatment. Do not compensate for missed sessions by using more gel or leaving it in longer.
Dietary instructions are specific to the system. Do not assume all coloured foods or all fruit must be avoided. Read our guide to a white diet after whitening and follow the advice supplied with your treatment.

What about Enlighten?
Enlighten is a dentist-supervised whitening system. Its manufacturer offers a Vita B1 shade guarantee and says a white diet is not required. This does not mean the result lasts for life without review or maintenance, or that treatment cannot cause sensitivity.
The latest Enlighten system offered at our practice does not require an additional in-surgery whitening appointment, although older versions did. Confirm your prescribed course and review appointments with the team. See our Enlighten guide.
