Enlighten teeth whitening: treatment, results and maintenance

Enlighten is a professional teeth-whitening system supplied through dental practices. It uses whitening gel and custom trays, with a course selected after your teeth and gums have been assessed.
The manufacturer offers a Vita B1 shade guarantee and states that a white diet is not required. Ask your dentist about suitability and the terms that apply to your treatment. A shade guarantee is not a promise that every restoration will change colour or that one course lasts for life.
Before treatment
Healthy teeth naturally vary in colour. Enamel and the dentine beneath it contribute to the shade, while ageing and surface stains can change appearance. Cleaning can remove deposits and some stains, but it does not necessarily change the underlying colour.
The dentist checks for problems that need treatment first and considers existing fillings, crowns or veneers. These do not whiten in the same way as natural teeth. Whitening is an adult cosmetic treatment and is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

How long does the course take?
Follow the plan prescribed for the version of the system you receive. The manufacturer’s current Evo4 guide describes a three-week home course and explicitly notes that individual plans may differ. See the Enlighten treatment guide.
The latest Enlighten system offered at our practice does not require an additional in-surgery whitening appointment. Older versions did include this step. Follow your prescribed course and confirm any review appointments and package contents with the team. Do not borrow wearing times from another gel or treatment version.
The team should check your tray fit, demonstrate the amount of gel and explain storage and cleaning. Use the product exactly as instructed and attend the recommended reviews.
Results and possible side effects
B1 is a reference shade on a tooth-colour guide, not a measure of dental health. The manufacturer’s FAQ explains its guarantee and no-white-diet guidance. The earlier claim of a 98% success rate is not needed to describe that guarantee.
Sensitivity and gum irritation can occur. Tell your dentist if symptoms are significant or persistent rather than increasing the gel or continuing through severe discomfort. A change in the colour of one tooth, particularly after injury, should be assessed before whitening.
Do not expect existing restorations to bleach to match. The team should explain any likely mismatch and whether further treatment is worth considering; replacement of sound restorations is not automatic.
Keeping the result
Colour may change again over time. Maintenance is a separate part of care, not proof that an initial course is permanent. Ask when a review or top-up is appropriate and use only the product and schedule prescribed for you.
There is no need to apply an old fixed schedule of one night every two, three and then six months to everyone. Tray fit, oral health and the treatment version can affect the advice. Keep brushing with fluoride toothpaste and cleaning between teeth, and avoid smoking.

The current listed Enlighten fee is £550. Ask for a written estimate confirming the course, appointments, products and any maintenance included before booking. The listed amount should not be taken as confirmation of an older package description.
