How to get whiter teeth safely

Originally published

Tooth colour varies from person to person. Enamel and the dentine beneath it both affect the shade, while age, staining and previous dental treatment can change its appearance. Teeth are not bones, and a naturally darker shade does not necessarily mean that your teeth are unhealthy or poorly cleaned.

Daily care helps keep your mouth healthy, but brushing harder will not safely turn every tooth white. If you want a lighter shade, a dental assessment is the best place to start.

Professional whitening options

Your dentist will check your teeth, gums and existing restorations, then discuss which approach is suitable. Whitening lightens natural teeth; fillings, crowns and veneers do not change colour in the same way. This can leave a mismatch that needs to be included in the treatment plan.

Our practice offers the following options:

  • Home whitening tray kit — £300. Fitted trays and prescribed gel are used according to the dental team’s instructions. The daily wearing time and length of the course depend on the product and your response.
  • In-surgery LED whitening — £400. Treatment is carried out in the practice. Discuss the likely shade change and any follow-up rather than assuming that one visit will achieve every result.
  • Enlighten whitening — £550. The latest Enlighten system we offer uses custom trays and does not require the additional in-surgery whitening appointment included in the older protocol. Your dentist will explain the schedule, assessment and agreed reviews.

Enlighten’s manufacturer guarantees Vita shade B1 and says a white diet is not required. B1 is a shade-guide reference, not a claim that it is the whitest colour possible on every scale. Your dentist should explain the guarantee and suitability for your teeth; it is not a promise of a lifelong result.

The current whitening fee page lists these services. Ask what preparation, reviews and any later top-ups would involve before you start.

Aftercare and sensitivity

Whitening can cause temporary sensitivity or irritation. Contact the dental team if you are uncomfortable, and do not increase the amount of gel or wearing time yourself. Significant or persistent pain needs assessment.

Follow the instructions for your chosen system. There is no single compulsory one- or two-week white diet that applies to all whitening, and Enlighten specifically says it does not require one. Smoking and staining drinks can still affect tooth colour over time. Stopping smoking has benefits beyond the appearance of your teeth.

Keep brushing with fluoride toothpaste and cleaning between your teeth. Whitening does not replace either of these habits.

Be cautious with home remedies

The image above illustrates a home whitening product, not a recommended treatment. Rubbing lemon juice or other acids on teeth can damage enamel. Rough homemade scrubs can also cause wear. A formulated toothpaste is not the same as mixing kitchen powders or peroxide yourself.

There is no reliable evidence that oil pulling or turmeric whitens teeth. Charcoal products should not be assumed to be safe or effective simply because they are described as natural. Our guide to home whitening remedies explains the concerns.

When whitening is not the right answer

A veneer may be considered for a tooth whose shape or discolouration cannot be addressed suitably by whitening alone. It is a restoration, with its own risks and future maintenance, and may require irreversible preparation. See our veneer fee information and discuss alternatives before deciding.

Implants replace missing teeth. They are not a whitening treatment or a reason to replace healthy teeth. Where a gap needs treatment, the options and implant costs should be considered separately.

Whitening is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and routine cosmetic whitening is not for under-18s. Active dental problems need attention first.
