How much do braces cost in the UK?

The cost of braces depends on the appliance, the complexity of treatment and what the quote includes. A fee for fitting an appliance to one arch is not the same as the cost of completing treatment on both upper and lower teeth.

Start with an orthodontic assessment. Your clinician will check your teeth, gums and bite, discuss your aims and explain which options are suitable. Crowding or gaps do not automatically mean that everyone needs treatment, and appearance is only one part of the decision.

Fixed braces

Fixed braces use brackets and a wire to apply controlled forces that gradually move teeth. The clinician adjusts the appliance during treatment and checks how your teeth and gums are responding. The schedule depends on your plan; appointments are not simply a matter of tightening every bracket.

Metal brackets are a familiar option. Ceramic brackets, including transparent versions sometimes described as sapphire, are less noticeable. Some clear elastic ties can stain, so ask about cleaning and food advice for the appliance you choose. A particular material does not make braces suitable for every bite.

Self-ligating brackets hold the wire with a built-in clip instead of the small elastic ties used with many conventional braces. This mechanism alone does not guarantee faster treatment or a better result. You can read more in our guide to self-ligating braces.

Lingual braces attach to the inner surfaces of the teeth. They are less visible from the front, but suitability, comfort and adaptation vary. Discuss any concerns about speech or tongue irritation rather than assuming that they will feel comfortable straight away.

Removable appliances and clear aligners

Removable appliances have different purposes. Some are used for particular tooth movements or bite problems, often during childhood. Clear aligners are a series of removable trays used to move teeth according to a treatment plan.

Invisalign and other aligner systems require consistent wear. Follow the prescribed daily wearing time, instructions about meals and cleaning, and the schedule for changing trays. There is no universal rule that one brand can be worn casually while another must be worn throughout the day.

Ask which options the practice currently offers and whether they can achieve the movements you need. The appearance of an appliance alone is not enough to choose a treatment.

Retainers and ongoing care

After active treatment, retainers help keep teeth in their new positions. They may be removable or fixed behind the teeth, and long-term wear is usually needed. Ask whether retainers, checks, repairs and replacements are included in your estimate.

Good cleaning matters throughout treatment. Plaque around brackets can lead to decay and gum problems. Your team will show you how to clean around the appliance and explain any food restrictions needed to prevent breakages. Keep routine dental appointments as well as orthodontic reviews.

Comparing prices and payment options

Ask for the total planned cost, including assessment, records, fitting, adjustment appointments, removal and retention. Also check what happens if treatment changes or an appliance breaks. Some items may be included and others charged separately; your written plan should make this clear.

Tooth position can change over time for several reasons. Early loss of milk teeth may affect space for permanent teeth, but wisdom teeth are not a reason to assume that front teeth will inevitably become crowded or that extraction will prevent it.
