What affects teeth whitening results and how long do they last?

Teeth whitening can lighten natural teeth, but the result and how long it lasts vary. Your starting shade, the cause of discolouration, the treatment used and ongoing care all matter. A dental assessment helps establish what is realistic for your teeth.

A very white shade is a cosmetic preference, not a measure of oral health. You can also choose to keep your natural colour.

Why do teeth respond differently?

Some discolouration is on the surface, while other changes come from within the tooth. Professional cleaning may remove external stains without bleaching the tooth itself. Whitening works differently and will not resolve every type of colour change equally well.

Age can affect tooth colour, but turning forty does not create a fixed threshold beyond which whitening stops working. Nor can the outcome be predicted simply by assuming that thicker or more mineralised enamel always whitens more easily.

A tooth that has changed colour after an injury, or one tooth that is noticeably darker, needs assessment before cosmetic treatment. Decay and gum problems should also be addressed. Existing crowns, veneers and fillings do not whiten in the same way as natural teeth, so colour differences may become more noticeable.

Does the method make a difference?

Dentist-supervised treatment may use custom trays at home or a procedure in the practice, depending on the system and your needs. Follow the prescribed amount of gel, wearing time and treatment course. Using more product or leaving it on longer is not a safe shortcut.

The bleaching product produces the colour change. The presence of a lamp does not by itself guarantee a better or longer-lasting result. Ask why a particular method is recommended and how progress will be checked.

Sensitivity and gum irritation can occur. Tell your dentist if these are troublesome rather than pushing through discomfort or adding another whitening product yourself.

What does the Enlighten guarantee mean?

Enlighten’s manufacturer offers a Vita B1 shade guarantee and states that a white diet is not required with its system. These points are described in the manufacturer’s FAQ. Ask your dentist about suitability, the course you need to follow and the guarantee’s terms.

This is not a promise of a lifetime result, or a claim that restorations will change colour. It also does not mean that sensitivity is impossible. Confirm exactly what the practice’s current package includes, including any review or maintenance products.

How long will the result last?

Whitening is not permanent. Colour can change again over time, and staining habits may affect appearance. There is no single duration that applies to every person, and a maintenance plan should not be confused with a guarantee that the initial treatment lasts for decades.

Keep brushing with fluoride toothpaste, clean between your teeth and attend dental reviews. Avoid smoking. Follow the instructions for your particular whitening system rather than a blanket rule banning coloured foods after every treatment. Enlighten’s no-white-diet guidance does not mean that teeth can never develop surface stains again.
