Medical Dent: looking back at our first ten years

In 2022, Medical Dent marked ten years since opening in West Bromwich. This article looks back at that first decade, from a single treatment room and one dentist to a larger team and a wider range of care.

Starting in West Bromwich
Medical Dent opened in 2012, initially providing general dentistry. As more patients came to the practice, we saw demand for other types of care. Orthodontic treatment was added around six months after opening, and more clinicians joined over time.
The growing number of patients also led to a second treatment room at the same premises. This was an expansion within the practice, rather than the opening of a second location.
Some patients travelled from beyond the local area. We remain grateful to everyone who placed their trust in the team during those early years and helped the practice develop.
A wider range of care
By the time of the anniversary, the practice described a team of seven dentists and care covering general and children’s dentistry, root canal treatment, replacement teeth, implants, orthodontics, gum treatment, oral surgery and whitening. The right treatment still depended on the individual patient’s needs; having a wider range of services did not mean that every patient needed more treatment.
Appointments had also expanded beyond the original schedule. Current opening times and individual clinicians’ availability may differ from those recorded in 2022, so please check with reception when planning a visit.
The practice also began sharing articles about everyday oral care and dental treatment. These are intended to help patients prepare questions and understand their options. They cannot replace an examination or a treatment plan based on your own mouth and health.
Equipment and treatment decisions
During the first decade, the practice introduced equipment including a dental microscope, panoramic imaging and an intraoral scanner. Magnification can help clinicians see fine details during suitable procedures. A panoramic X-ray gives an overview of the teeth and jaws, but it does not reveal every dental problem or replace other tests when needed.
Digital scans can be used for some crowns and bridges instead of conventional impressions. The choice depends on the treatment and clinical situation. None of these tools, by itself, guarantees shorter, cheaper or discomfort-free care.
The anniversary article also described Vector Paro Pro for periodontal care and the Enlighten whitening system. Gum treatment requires an individual plan and ongoing care. Whitening results and maintenance needs vary, and a two-week course should not be understood as a promise that teeth will stay the same shade for life.
Dental laboratories were another part of providing restorations such as crowns and bridges. The useful question for a patient is what restoration is suitable, how it will be made and how to look after it, rather than an unsupported ranking of laboratories.
