Custom teeth whitening trays: use, care and cost

Custom whitening trays hold a dentist-prescribed gel against your teeth while you use it at home. They offer a gradual approach to whitening, with a schedule agreed with your dentist rather than one you need to work out yourself.
Whitening is optional cosmetic treatment. Healthy teeth naturally vary in shade, and the result depends on your teeth and the product used.
Is tray whitening suitable for you?
The dentist first checks your teeth and gums and discusses the change you would like. Decay, gum inflammation or a faulty restoration may need attention before whitening. Cleaning may be recommended to remove surface stains or tartar, but it does not guarantee a particular whitening result.
Whitening lightens natural teeth, not fillings, crowns or veneers. Existing restorations can therefore look a different shade afterwards. Cosmetic whitening is for adults and is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Sensitivity can occur even with a well-fitting tray. Tell the dentist if you already have sensitive teeth; this method is not automatically the best option simply because you are worried about sensitivity.
Making and using the trays
An impression or scan is used to make trays for your teeth. At the fitting appointment, the team checks them and explains how much gel to use, how long to wear them and how to protect your gums.
Whitening trays are different from orthodontic aligners. Do not use an aligner or another dental appliance for whitening unless your dentist has specifically advised it.
Follow the instructions for your prescribed gel. Some products have shorter wearing times and others are used overnight; there is no single schedule for every product. Do not add extra gel or extend the wearing time to speed up the result.
If your teeth become painful or your gums sore, pause treatment and contact the dental team for advice. They can check the fit and advise whether the schedule or product needs changing.
Looking after the trays and the result
Clean and store the trays as instructed, keeping them away from heat that could distort them. Follow the gel’s storage instructions too and keep it out of children’s reach.
The whitening effect is not permanent, and its duration varies. Before a top-up, ask the dentist to check that your mouth is healthy and the trays still fit. Tooth movement or new dental work may mean they need replacing. Do not start repeated courses just because some gel is left over.
Continue brushing with fluoride toothpaste and cleaning between your teeth. Food and drink advice should match the whitening system. For example, Enlighten’s manufacturer FAQ says its treatment does not require a “white diet”; that is not a reason to apply the same instructions to every gel. Smoking can stain teeth and harm oral health.
